Independence Park, next to City Hall, Ahlströminkatu 6
At the end of the Vekara-Varkaus festival week, enjoy the summery Independence Park and cheerful children’s music. Picnic baskets and blankets should be dug out of the cupboards and outdoor clothes put on as you listen to live music and let your dancing feet shake on the green dance floor.
At the Park Concert, Lehtevämies and Anssi Huotari, Merkkarit and Kai Kuutamo and Henna & the Superheroes will entertain the whole family from baby to grandchild. Lehtevämies tells stories and performs catchy children’s songs by his creator Jukka Itkonen. Merkkarit is a Ramones-inspired children’s music duo, where Captain Kisu and Sailor Valtteri play with a snappy touch and Commander Kai Kuutamo takes care of the moments of excitement by juggling. The concert by Merkkarei and Kai Kuutamo is supported by Finnforel Oy, a responsible fish farming company. Henna and the Superheroes will perform catchy children’s songs that are easy to sing, dance, play and laugh along to. The band features top rhythm and folk musicians with successful careers both at home and abroad.
At the edge of the park you can ride a pony on a leash and the animals of the Varkaus Region Animal Welfare Society will delight visitors of all ages. Tassukamut will be on hand to demonstrate the activities of their buddy dogs. Sweet and savoury snacks will be available from the park’s refreshment stalls. You can also get your head spinning in the World Championships in the bobsleigh and other activities in the park area.
The Tyyskä Local History Centre is open on the day of the park concert from 12.00-17.00. The Warkaus Society has organised a childcare room and toilet facilities in the historic building, as well as a café with summer delicacies. In the courtyard of the Heritage Centre, you can watch the turtles crawling around the summer grass. The event lasts about 2.5 hours.
